Speaker:
Susan Naimark
Author of “The Education of a White Parent: Wrestling with Race and Opportunity in the Boston Public Schools”
SUSAN NAIMARK is an independent consultant who works with public school parents, grassroots groups, and nonprofit and public agencies to create responsive community institutions. She was a founder of the Boston Parent Organizing Network, a member of the Boston School Committee, and has served in leadership roles with several national nonprofit community development organizations. Susan’s home since 1977 has been the Boston neighborhood of Jamaica Plain, where she and her husband raised two now-adult sons.
Susan’s paid work in nonprofit community development has taken her from modest beginnings of building a community garden down the street from her home, to training Gulf Coast grassroots leaders after Hurricane Katrina on building sustainable community organizations; from organizing tenants in subsidized housing in Boston, to funding and supporting community building efforts across the country. Her volunteer work for many years has focused on racial justice and public school organizing. Susan is a part-time faculty at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, School of Education, an affiliate trainer with Teachers 21 and Interaction Institute for Social Change, and serves as co-chair of the board of directors of Community Change, Inc., a Boston-based racial justice education and organizing group.
